PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING-DRAFT SAFETY ELEMENT
CITY OF FERNDALE
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
General Plan Safety Element Update
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD BEFORE THE CITY OF FERNDALE PLANNING COMMISSION ON JANUARY 5, 2022 AT 7:00 PM, OR AS SOON THEREAFTER AS THE MATTER CAN BE HEARD, VIA VIDEOCONFERENCE TO CONSIDER THE CITY OF FERNDALE GENERAL PLAN SAFETY ELEMENT UPDATE.
The City of Ferndale has prepared an update to the City’s General Plan Safety Element. The Safety Element went through a comprehensive update process in 2013; this 2021 update includes revisions to comply with changes to current State General Plan guidelines.
The Safety Element aims to reduce the potential risks to persons and property resulting from fires, floods, earthquakes, landslides, and other hazards. The 2021 Safety Element Update includes new State-mandated safety considerations for climate change and emergency evacuation routes. Ferndale may experience some effects from climate change such as changing precipitation patterns which can lead to more intense flooding, increased chance of wildfire to the south, and changing drainage patterns due to sea level rise. The additional chapter in the Safety Element highlights these concerns and provides adaptation and conservation measures to help curb the effects of climate change on the City. Additional goals, policies, and implementation programs have also been added to Chapter 10 relating to climate change.
At the hearing, the Planning Commission will consider tentative approval of the Safety Element pending completion of CEQA. Any persons with questions, comments, and concerns on the Safety Element Update are encouraged to present their views to the Commission at this public hearing. Comments can also be submitted in writing prior to the hearing by email to krystleh@planwestpartners.com or to the City Clerk at PO Box 1095, Ferndale, CA 95536.
